Do i need planning permission for my sign?
When planning new signage for your shop, business or public building whether it be short term flags and banners or permanent fascia signs, the question of whether to seek permission before proceeding with new signage is one that we get asked about alot.
The short answer is that their is no short answer. Every case is different and depends on many factors including:
Type of sign, size of sign, how long you wish to display your sign, what you do, whether your in Luton, Dunstable, Harpenden, St Albans, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire or the Scottish Highlands can all have a bearing on whether you need planning permission or not.
Regardless of the specifics of your situation their are five “standard conditions” that all outdoor advertisments must adhere too:
• Be kept clean and tidy.
• Be kept in a safe condition.
• Have the permission of the owner of the site on which they are displayed (this includes the Highway Authority if the sign is to be placed on highway land).
• Not obscure, or hinder the interpretation of, official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport.
• Be removed carefully where so required by the planning authority.
